Batam Scare

Hi friends. YMKK is a org in Batam tat does outreach work with the sex workers there who wish to be out of the trade or are experiencing physical abuse etc from pimps/underworld lords/people who own them. my one day trip there brought light into the growing number of Singaporean men visiting Batam to get their dose of pleasure, some owning more than 2 women while some have mistresses all over with a house too. The numbers are no different, there are the apeks/old men Chinese presumably but Unifem has made it clear it is not a huge difference between ethnicity or age. One other issue was the HIV epidemic and a volunteer doctor who works on HIV cases with sex workers most of whom have Singaporean clients, brought up a point we all cld relate too. He said that there is no exchange of information with Spore abt the need to control HIV infection and calls for greater partnerships. He cited the SARS epidemic, where the govt and doctors readily came forward to share information on how to control the outbreak but not the same can be said abt HIV. Singaporean men infected with HIV go home to their wives and further infect them. That said, he also revealed most Singaporean men use condoms as per his observations. Perhaps, there is a form of awareness here as compared to Batam? He also called for this same method of awareness to be used in Batam as well.

The list can go on and on but i'll touch on my own personal observation now.

We toured the red light district which is a squatter settlement called 'Jodoh'. Ironic, since Jodoh in Malay means 'The One' particularly referring to the one you're gonna marry. I was not allowed to snap pics for fear of endangering the work of the social workers hence i cant show u what i mean. what i saw were blank looks of desperation. im new to all this, the only visuals i get are from pictures or the television. but it was a different shock when i experienced it face to face. i saw the decline of hope. no way out. worst still, i not only saw this in women but on the innocent faces of children as well.
